The Heiniger Saphir Basic is a cordless clipper for detail work on horses. At 425 grams and with a quiet run, you use it to tidy up the head, ears, legs and withers, even on horses that would rather not stand still for long. The clipper uses snap-on blade sets that you change without tools. This set contains a battery, a charger and maintenance tools.
About this clipper
The Saphir Basic has a 35 watt motor that makes 2650 double strokes per minute. A double stroke is one complete back-and-forth movement of the top blade. That figure therefore tells you something about how fast the clipper moves through the coat, and nothing about the cutting height: that is set by the blade set you fit.
The machine weighs 425 grams and measures 204 by 50 by 41 millimetres. That is the size of a sturdy trimmer, which lets you hold it like a pen for fine work around the ears, under the jaw or along the coronet. Working without a cord helps with that: you turn with the horse instead of around the cord.
The 7.4 volt, 1600 mAh lithium-ion battery gives up to 120 minutes of clipping time and is full again in about an hour. This version contains one battery. Anyone who wants to keep going without a break on a busy day is better off keeping a second battery within reach, because the charging time otherwise eats into your planning.
The Saphir works with snap-on blade sets: one complete blade set that you change without a screwdriver. That is something other than the screw-on blade system of, say, a Lister Star, where you fasten two separate blades. The blade sets of the Saphir and the Opal are interchangeable with each other. The cutting height depends on the number: #40 clips at 0.25 mm, #30 at 0.5 mm, #15 at 1.2 mm, #10 at 1.5 mm, #9 at 2.0 mm, #7 at 3.2 mm and #5 at 6.3 mm. On the wide blade sets, recognisable by the W, it is about a wider cutting width: #15W clips at 1.0 mm, #10W at 2.3 mm and #10WF at 1.5 mm.
