Prepare your equipment to start your season well. Some questions?
When waxing skis, a suitable wax is applied to their bases. The base is located under the ski; it's the part that is in direct contact with the snow when you ride. Waxing optimises the gliding quality of your ski or snowboard bases. There are different types of solid waxes, which are applied hot, and liquid waxes, which are applied cold.
Wax your gear every 3 to 5 outings—or as soon as the base turns white—to maintain a smooth glide. Sharpen the edges every 5 to 8 outings to guarantee optimal grip on hard snow. Fill deep scratches immediately with P-Tex to protect the core from water infiltration. At the end of the season, apply a generous layer of storage wax (don't scrape it off) and store your equipment in a dry place.
This will depend on your usage, but contrary to popular belief, maintenance at the beginning of the season is not always necessary. Be careful, this statement is only true on one condition: your skis must be waxed at the end of the season! A thicker layer of wax than during peak season will help preserve them well throughout the year. When you take them out again, simply scrape off the excess before heading out to enjoy the slopes.
When we talk about sharpening, we're talking about maintaining the edges of your skis. The edges are located under the ski on either side of the base. They allow you to literally cut through the snow, and it's thanks to them that you grip on ice. Poorly sharpened skis or those with damaged edges will be difficult to steer.
Rust appearing on your ski edges is due to humidity. There are several explanations: Skis were not properly dried between two outings. Skis were not properly dried between two seasons, or they were stored in a humid place. While not ideal, it's not dramatic. It's easy to prevent rust from appearing: Dry your skis with a cloth after an outing; do not let them air dry before storing them. Find a dry place to store your skis once you have dried them (garages are often prone to humidity). Place your skis vertically against a wall rather than storing them directly edge-to-edge to prevent them from rusting.
In practice, yes, you can adjust your bindings yourself; we’ve even created a tutorial for it. However, we strongly recommend having a ski professional adjust them for you. An incorrect adjustment can have consequences: you risk releasing too easily, or failing to release during a fall and injuring yourself.
