The cable probe
There are 2 main types of probe on the market:the cable probe, and the cord probe.Our Simond design teams, based in Chamonix, one of the world's leading mountaineering hubs, have designed this cable system, renowned and recognised for its rigidity (constant tension for precise probing, does not bend in hard snow) and for its optimal reliability over time, thanks to excellent resistance to abrasion and frost.All this at an extremely competitive price.
How does the probe unfold?
In a single step, the probe unfolds and the sections quickly slot into each other. The cable and the automatic locking system simplify its deployment thanks to the shouldered shaft located in the last section. 4 tightening levels available: the tighter the cable, the more rigid the probe.
How do you store the probe?
Once folded, the probe can be stored in a 46cm bag: - 6 sections measuring 43cm each for the 240cm format -7 sections measuring 43cm each for the 280cm format.
What is the diameter of the probe?
The diameter of the cone-shaped tip is larger than that of the probe. This makes a larger hole in order to easily penetrate the probe into the snow piled up by an avalanche. The probe consists of 7 sections and has been designed with a 12.5mm diameter to be stronger when probing in hard snow.
Is the probe easy to grip?
Its long foam sleeve glued to the last section makes it easier to grip, even when wearing gloves. The synthetic handle sewn onto the cable allows you to deploy the probe quickly. Did you know? Gloves should be worn when probing to avoid contaminating the area with odours other than those of the victims.
What is the purpose of the markings on the sections?
A first set of markings every 5cm and more visible markings every 50cm allow you to identify the depth at which the victim is located.
What is the purpose of the shovel/probe/AVD set?
The mountains offer a scenic playground of adventure, but which also requires a great deal of caution to be exercised. The use of the shovel/probe/AVD (avalanche victim detector) set is essential for locating and rescuing avalanche victims. Please note that these three items are not intended to provide a feeling of absolute protection.Regular practice and training sessions, particularly at the start of the season, are highly recommended.
